For this blog post I decided to write about Facebook and how it has become a source of information for most people. Today people update their Facebook profiles and statuses before anything else. When someone wants to figure out the relationship status of someone they immediately go to their profile and that is considered the ultimate confirmation about their relationship. Basically people think that if it is posted on Facebook then it is valid and cannot be wrong. When important events such as getting engaged or having a baby happen in people’s lives, their first concern is uploading a picture of their new baby or posting a picture of the ring and the happy couple, before even calling and updating their family members. I had a recent experience with one of my mom’s cousins where their daughter got engaged and immediately posted it on Facebook and telling everyone and our whole family saw and called her dad to congratulate him about it. When everyone called he had no idea what was going on because his daughter hadn’t told him about it and their whole family found out through Facebook. It is interesting to me how now people’s priorities are to update everyone on Facebook about their lives before their own family, because half the people who are our friends we either don’t know, and lost touch with but they are the ones people are rushing to tell first.

Brogan says that commenting on people’s blogs is something that is appreciated by the blogger. He tries to leave thoughtful comments for people and it can help them out to hear back about what they are writing about. It can influence the way a person continues to blog or put their content out there for their followers.

The most interesting concept for me so far in this class is the use of blogs as a professional tool. Now since everyone has their lives centered around social media and the internet most of our stuff is too. Especially learning about how now people use blogs as a type of portfolio. It was a new idea I learned about and that I want to start trying to use my blog as a professional tool so in the future when I apply for internships or jobs I can send a link to my blog that contains my work.  

The most boring concept for me was Wikis. I had heard about them just from other people but I never found them useful or interesting. I feel like the actual use of wiki’s are for a more professional setting because they are tools developed to enhance businesses.

Like I said previously I want to take my blog and use it as a portfolio of my work that I can later use in my career. It is also a lot simpler because all you have to do is send a link with what I’d be applying for and they have access to everything. I also want to use what we learned about Facebook and keeping the content professional because potential employers will look you up on Facebook and judge you off of what they see on your page. 

Wikis

The mass amount of social media that is available to people these days has created easy access to numerous audiences. For any business or company they can use these social media sites such as twitter, Facebook, Google +, etc to promote and reach consumers out there within a matter of seconds. Twitter now has a “Promoted” trending topic which is a different company, product, etc that pays twitter to have their merchandise, etc’s tweet on every single twitter account users news feed, this is just one way a company can use social media as a beneficial tool.

Wikis allow free range for creating and editing web pages among users. The use of Wikis as a collaborative tool is a beneficial one because it allows instant access to the same information between everyone and everyone has the freedom to change a part of the content that they personally believe isn’t right or relevant to the topic. The investment of Wikis I think is based upon the intentional use of the Wikis capabilities. For companies I think it would be a good investment because it allows the internal people at the company to control and communicate internally and externally.

The topics for discussion on this Wiki is about The Hunger Games Soundtrack which the book series and movie is a big topic for discussion today. There is the listing of songs and artists from the actually movie and then there is other recent activity on other Wikis along with links to read more about The Hunger Games concept in general. Then there is a promotion for a song written by Taylor Swift which is described as a promotional single for the movie before it was advertised.

My Usage of Social Media Sites

The Social Networking Site I use the most: Facebook

1. I use Facebook to stay in touch and up to date with my friends.
2. I can talk to and see what my friend from back home or at other schools are doing.
3. I would add some more features that allow people to custom design their profile page that represent them.
4. I don’t like the format of timeline because it is not a good format for Facebook.



Features that I think are the best attributes.

5.  It’s collaborative because it allows communication and the access to knowledge and events to everyone that has an account with Facebook. It creates a Facebook community among the users.

The Social Networking Site I use less frequently: Twitter

1. I use this less then Facebook because I just never really got into the whole concept of twitter since it’s just a website for status updates.
2. This is different because its only status updates and users can also follow celebrities, etc on Twitter and get a more personal look into their lives because of the way twitter is used.
3. I would change the 160 character limit to tweets because it limits how much you can say in one tweet.
4. Yes I still go back to using it, I am getting used to Twitter but I just don’t spend a lot of time of that website. 

What Are My Goals For This Blog?

Social media as we all know is changing our world and the way it functions, the use of blogs allows anybody to have a voice and put their opinions out there for others. My goals for this blog are to develop it into a tool that I could possibly use in the future in my life and my career. I have seen people in my field use blogs as a type of portfolio of their work. I would like to update my blog on a regular basis and eventually turn it into a site that I can use to my benefit in my professional career.

I chose to add the search button by Google because it allows anyone who reads my blog and wants to find something on my blog or on someone else’s blog they just have to scroll to the bottom of the page. This affects the usability of my blog because it allows a more convenient way for people to search anywhere without having to leave.
