Blog Week 8

Recently with the development of social media sites and the growth in their usage a main issue that has risen from it is cyber bullying. A lot of teens these days are using sites like Twitter to attack other people and reveal personal things about them in order to embarrass them. This year I’ve seen on Twitter numerous fight between friends about stuff that should have been kept private and dealt with in not such a public manner. Girls will either directly “tag” someone in their tweet in order to hurt them or tweet about them indirectly which is called “sub-tweeting”.  Although people think that they are being clever when sub tweeting it usually isn’t that hard to figure out whom the person is generally tweeting about. This year because of the multiple twitter fights between girls, sororities have started to implement a social media contract, which they all have to sign and agree to the terms. This is an approach to stop the consistent Twitter drama and because it doesn’t make the girls or their organization look good. Approaches like a social media contract is something that most organizations have had to develop due to some of the controversy about content on people’s individual social media pages.

Open Source Movement- Blog #6

What does Rheingold say about cooperation and collaboration?

Rheingold’s says that collaboration is key to the individuals who want to succeed in today’s world because of the culture that is emerging and knowing how to collaborate is one of the skills/concepts that we have to adapt and accept. Cooperation he says is necessary because you have to be willing to learn the action provided by this technology. It decides whether or not you use it effectively and determines if people learn how to execute the right kind of collaboration.

How does it relate to the open-source movement as we discussed in class today?

It relates to the open source movement because that is also a new type of social media that is evolving with multiple networks, and person-to-person learning processes. This is a type of digital media that has lowered the barriers to joint actions in the way we as humans live our everyday lives.

What do you think about the open-source movement?

I think that the open source movement is a type of methodology that will take time for it’s process to effectively take hold of the digital and social networks. It is a useful tool that has shown up within recent years and people are still trying to figure out how to use it and where to use it most effectively. It isn’t for just for the people developing but it gives the consumers a voice as to what they want which is a new concept that takes time for everyone to explore.

What are the odds of its success?

I think the odds of success can go either way. Like I stated before it targets not just the developers but the consumers using it and provides them a voice which as we all know people like to be heard and are more inclined to react positively when able to do so. I believe it’s success will do well especially in a business aspect because of the ability for customization, the cost is  not monetary, it’s motivated by a desire to make things better, come out with better software due to the collaboration among employees, and it expands the market to a more global aspect keeping everyone on the same page. If it continues to address the business and social needs of the consumers and create a type o routine where it becomes necessary to use then it will most likely succeed.

Do you think people will move towards it or will proprietary software companies always have bank on software development and distribution?

I think that people will always want proprietary software such as, Microsoft Office, because you can’t alter it and it is the same basic concept no matter where you go. If people start to use a more open source software and the benefits outrank proprietary software then the distribution of software and its development it up for grabs. Like Rheingold says “technology trends made a persuasive case that pervasive mobile communications, combined with always-on Internet connections, will produce new kinds of ad-hoc social groups.” Until the movement becomes a more dominate technological trend it will continue to have the potential to go either way.

Will you buy into it?

I haven’t bought into it at the moment because like I have discussed before I haven’t really used the open source software in my everyday life to the point where I have developed a real need for it. If I was working in a business then maybe I would buy into it a little more, but for right now its nothing that will gain my attention.

Blog Post #5

For this blog post I decided to write about Facebook and how it has become a source of information for most people. Today people update their Facebook profiles and statuses before anything else. When someone wants to figure out the relationship status of someone they immediately go to their profile and that is considered the ultimate confirmation about their relationship. Basically people think that if it is posted on Facebook then it is valid and cannot be wrong. When important events such as getting engaged or having a baby happen in people’s lives, their first concern is uploading a picture of their new baby or posting a picture of the ring and the happy couple, before even calling and updating their family members. I had a recent experience with one of my mom’s cousins where their daughter got engaged and immediately posted it on Facebook and telling everyone and our whole family saw and called her dad to congratulate him about it. When everyone called he had no idea what was going on because his daughter hadn’t told him about it and their whole family found out through Facebook. It is interesting to me how now people’s priorities are to update everyone on Facebook about their lives before their own family, because half the people who are our friends we either don’t know, and lost touch with but they are the ones people are rushing to tell first.

Comments-Blog Post #4

Brogan says that commenting on people’s blogs is something that is appreciated by the blogger. He tries to leave thoughtful comments for people and it can help them out to hear back about what they are writing about. It can influence the way a person continues to blog or put their content out there for their followers.

The most interesting concept for me so far in this class is the use of blogs as a professional tool. Now since everyone has their lives centered around social media and the internet most of our stuff is too. Especially learning about how now people use blogs as a type of portfolio. It was a new idea I learned about and that I want to start trying to use my blog as a professional tool so in the future when I apply for internships or jobs I can send a link to my blog that contains my work.

The most boring concept for me was Wikis. I had heard about them just from other people but I never found them useful or interesting. I feel like the actual use of wiki’s are for a more professional setting because they are tools developed to enhance businesses.

Like I said previously I want to take my blog and use it as a portfolio of my work that I can later use in my career. It is also a lot simpler because all you have to do is send a link with what I’d be applying for and they have access to everything. I also want to use what we learned about Facebook and keeping the content professional because potential employers will look you up on Facebook and judge you off of what they see on your page.

Wikis

The mass amount of social media that is available to people these days has created easy access to numerous audiences. For any business or company they can use these social media sites such as twitter, Facebook, Google +, etc to promote and reach consumers out there within a matter of seconds. Twitter now has a “Promoted” trending topic which is a different company, product, etc that pays twitter to have their merchandise, etc’s tweet on every single twitter account users news feed, this is just one way a company can use social media as a beneficial tool.

Wikis allow free range for creating and editing web pages among users. The use of Wikis as a collaborative tool is a beneficial one because it allows instant access to the same information between everyone and everyone has the freedom to change a part of the content that they personally believe isn’t right or relevant to the topic. The investment of Wikis I think is based upon the intentional use of the Wikis capabilities. For companies I think it would be a good investment because it allows the internal people at the company to control and communicate internally and externally.

The topics for discussion on this Wiki is about The Hunger Games Soundtrack which the book series and movie is a big topic for discussion today. There is the listing of songs and artists from the actually movie and then there is other recent activity on other Wikis along with links to read more about The Hunger Games concept in general. Then there is a promotion for a song written by Taylor Swift which is described as a promotional single for the movie before it was advertised.

My Usage of Social Media Sites

The Social Networking Site I use the most: Facebook
  1. I use Facebook to stay in touch and up to date with my friends.
  2. I can talk to and see what my friend from back home or at other schools are doing.
  3. I would add some more features that allow people to custom design their profile page that represent them.
  4. I don’t like the format of timeline because it is not a good format for Facebook.
  5. Features that I think are the best attributes.
  6.  It’s collaborative because it allows communication and the access to knowledge and events to everyone that has an account with Facebook. It creates a Facebook community among the users.

The Social Networking Site I use less frequently: Twitter
  1. I use this less then Facebook because I just never really got into the whole concept of twitter since it’s just a website for status updates.
  2. This is different because its only status updates and users can also follow celebrities, etc on Twitter and get a more personal look into their lives because of the way twitter is used.
  3. I would change the 160 character limit to tweets because it limits how much you can say in one tweet.
  4. Yes I still go back to using it, I am getting used to Twitter but I just don’t spend a lot of time of that website.

What Are My Goals For This Blog?

Social media as we all know is changing our world and the way it functions, the use of blogs allows anybody to have a voice and put their opinions out there for others. My goals for this blog are to develop it into a tool that I could possibly use in the future in my life and my career. I have seen people in my field use blogs as a type of portfolio of their work. I would like to update my blog on a regular basis and eventually turn it into a site that I can use to my benefit in my professional career.

I chose to add the search button by Google because it allows anyone who reads my blog and wants to find something on my blog or on someone else’s blog they just have to scroll to the bottom of the page. This affects the usability of my blog because it allows a more convenient way for people to search anywhere without having to leave.

Introduction

I chose to come to Ohio University for my major, video production, because my ultimate goal is to become a video editor. I have worked a lot in video producing, directing, and editing and found that I had a passion for it and wanted to continue that in college. I am originally from New Canaan, Connecticut and I found Ohio University because of the Scripps College of Communication. I recently got accepted to study abroad this summer for filmmaking in Ireland which is an exciting because I’ve previously been to Ireland 3 summers ago, so I like that I am able to go back and study film.

I joined this class because it is related in some aspects to my major. My major is video production and the use of social media and sharing of information is relevant to the distribution of future content. I, like many others, use social media constantly everyday and since social media is a tool that we all use everyday of our lives I wanted to take this class to gain a better understanding of these websites and how they are changing and affecting our lives in ways that we may not even be aware of.  My goals for this class this quarter is to learn about how companies and possible employers Facebook search your profile and how they can get around privacy settings.  These employers can see content that maybe you thought you successfully blocked and it could be the reason as to why you do or don’t get a job, and this is a goal of mine to learn more about and to find ways to fix my social media profiles that I may have never learned or thought to do. This class is also very relevant with our current society today because social media has become a huge deal and tool recently with people and companies when it comes to promoting brands and events. This is another topic that I want to learn more about in this class which is to further explore how social media took off and how sites like Facebook went from a website for high school and college students to a website for parents and business men to use as a way to conduct business or locate relatives that they lost touch with.
