Introduction

I chose to come to Ohio University for my major, video production, because my ultimate goal is to become a video editor. I have worked a lot in video producing, directing, and editing and found that I had a passion for it and wanted to continue that in college. I am originally from New Canaan, Connecticut and I found Ohio University because of the Scripps College of Communication. I recently got accepted to study abroad this summer for filmmaking in Ireland which is an exciting because I’ve previously been to Ireland 3 summers ago, so I like that I am able to go back and study film.

I joined this class because it is related in some aspects to my major. My major is video production and the use of social media and sharing of information is relevant to the distribution of future content. I, like many others, use social media constantly everyday and since social media is a tool that we all use everyday of our lives I wanted to take this class to gain a better understanding of these websites and how they are changing and affecting our lives in ways that we may not even be aware of.  My goals for this class this quarter is to learn about how companies and possible employers Facebook search your profile and how they can get around privacy settings.  These employers can see content that maybe you thought you successfully blocked and it could be the reason as to why you do or don’t get a job, and this is a goal of mine to learn more about and to find ways to fix my social media profiles that I may have never learned or thought to do. This class is also very relevant with our current society today because social media has become a huge deal and tool recently with people and companies when it comes to promoting brands and events. This is another topic that I want to learn more about in this class which is to further explore how social media took off and how sites like Facebook went from a website for high school and college students to a website for parents and business men to use as a way to conduct business or locate relatives that they lost touch with.
